It was supposed to look like this. Summer feeling!
I was supposed to be sitting outside in my bikini, reading books on my new ereader, while sipping a glass of cold Sangria, squinting against the bright sun now and then to see my little boy in his inflatable pool, splashing about.
Rain, rain and then some more rain. Oh, and a wind blowing so hard that the house sounds like its going to collapse. Seriously creepy.
It’s been raining so violently, our sewer system has a problem keeping up. As a result, the rainwater has overflowed the street in front of my house. It looks like a fricken river. Same goes for my back yard. I’m pretty sure somewhere in Holland the rainwater is gushing down stairwells and straight into people’s basements by now.
It’s the risk of living in a country below sea level, I guess, but this is so not what I had in mind when I said I wanted to have a swimming pool.
I take it back, Universe! Stop messing with us.
Been told even in California it’s exceptionally cold for this time of year. Where are you located, and is it as extreme there as it has been here for these past few days?
We have had an exceptionally hot summer here in Virginia. Rain, but not extreme rains so it’s green and lush here. Sorry about your horrible weather. There’s always tomorrow, right?
Oh Kay! I hate to tell you I love these cold, wet Dutch summer days! I’m all gezellig at home, made chutney and preserved lemons and am not feeling the least bit sad looking at the rain on the windows!
Hope you get your sunny summer weather soon!
Hi Kaye – sorry to say in Prince Edward Island, Canada it is cold also. We have only had a few nice warm beach days and we are at the middle of July. But it could be worse – a few short months and we’ll be back in the snow.
That’s why I am living in the South (and believe me it’s hot) I am not complaining. I can better deal with the heat :)
It’s been 105F for a week now… sigh. Very, very hot. Even watering the plants every night isn’t helping – they’re crisping right up.
Very hot here in Ma. we finally had a break with thunderstorms…went from 90 to 63. Feels great here this morning…hopefully a good beach day in a bit…
Here in Belgrade, Serbia we’re having a heat wave (35+ C every day this week), the kind where your heels sink into the asphalt. However, just a week or two ago, it was rain, rain, rain… and thunderstorms… and some 15 degrees less than what we’re experiencing now. To be perfectly honest, I don’t know which is worse. Maybe just that – swinging from one extreme into the other :) Somehow, though, I’m pretty sure that by the time I’m able to visit our beloved city beach again, it will be cold and raining. Now, that sucks.
I wish Toronto was a little cooler and had some rain. We have been in the mid-high 20′s. It’s been hot and humid and no rain for almost 2 weeks now. The grass is going brown and even the weed aren’t happy.
I am wishing for some rain….
It’s been very atypical in Colorado – horrific thunderstorms every night with sheets of rain like we are in a Carribbean monsoon. NOT the dry climate I signed up for when I moved here 26 years ago, but thankfully I haven’t had to spend any time watering my plants!
We’re had a strange summer here in England. End of March, beginning of April it was FABULOUS. We were going for long, lazy walks, having picnics, the rain was predictable (bright sun for ten days, then one day of rain, repeat) and then end of April it went to hell for about two months – constantly humid and yet always raining. Now it seems to be struggling, but returning to how it was, or so it seems. Once a week we’re getting some sort of manic storm that once or twice has come with hot hail which is slightly strange.
Then again, coming from here, we just love bitching about the weather.
Hot & Sunny here in Pennsylvania, USA! you should come for a visit!
Let me grab my bikini! :)
We’re having some pretty high temperatures here, in Romania, at least in the northern east of the country, where I’m living. But only a week ago, there used to be rain every day. Not as you’ve described it being in the Netherlands, but still..it rained pretty frequently. And it’s been so hot these days that I’m beginning to miss the moist of the weather a couple of weeks ago, honestly! :) 37+ C, even. Horrific.
No rain here for at least until the beginning of September… guaranteed! Nice hot days and cooler nights here in the mountains of Andalucia… It’s only 2,5 hours by plane! Should come and rent our cottage:-)
Saludos.
Well…you know what it’s like in Austin, Texas…..working on 30th 100+ day of the year…and 102 today with a heat index of 106 or so…..send some rain across the pond.
We are having the weirdest weather imaginable in Utah this summer. It will be scorchingly hot one day and the next day it rains buckets (one day in June we got what was normally an entire month of rainfall in one day.) Of course the Mormons here think it means the end of the world is coming soon, but I doubt that! Hang in there.
Yeah, I heard the date for the rapture had been pushed back again. Unfortunately though I’m way too busy on October 21st. Think we can get a raincheck?
I live in British Columbia Canada and we’re having one of the worst summers on record. Rain, rain and more rain. We’ve had very little sunshine and no temps over 24c. It’s depressing!
In Vancouver, BC. Weather sucks. Very little sunshine and only 2 days above 24. Today it is pouring rain AGAIN. Very green summer but the crops are paying the price. Our strawberries, cherries and blueberries are not bearing the lack of sunshine well at all. I don’t remember a summer quite this wet for years.
Hey kay!
I’m in beautiful Nova Scotia Canada, well at least the scenary is beautiful, the weather…not so much! I’m curled up on the sofa with a hot cup of tea trying to stay warm. My bottom half refuses to admit that it’s cold so it’s clad in shorts while the top half is warm and cozy in a hoodie zipped to my chin!
Would far sooner be at the beach….soon..I hope….fingers crossed!
Even tho is winter time here in Brazil, the bright, cloudless, blue sky is prettier than ever! Looks like is spring time!
The best part is that this is always like that, pretty much!
But, some of the rains can make a mess too.. streeets almost like a river, like over there! :(
I hope it gets better!
What you’re complaining of now is what I’ve been experiencing at home up until 2 weeks ago. Yes, that’s when I left for vacation>>no, don’t get excited, I went to Alaska. Expected rain (and did get some) but have now had about 8 days of overcast but warm days and then SUN!! The rain and clouds are back today but it’s time for me to head home. With weather, it’s usually “This too shall pass”. And it will! I like the idea of making chutneys from Suzie (above). Canning is great to do when it’s cool!! Keep the bikini close!!
No rain here in the far western suburbs of Chicago for a few weeks now, with a heat wave starting in a day or so (95F/35C and humid). Please send rain (no wind, please) my way! My garden thanks you!
Now I love cold weather and don’t mind hot weather, but when the temp jumps from the 50F/10C to 80F/27C without any hint of Spring, that just makes me mad. I wasn’t able to open the windows and air of my house this spring ‘cuz it was always too cold or too hot and humid. Humidity is gross!
I like TheLunchLady am in PA. Hot and more hot here. Each time it’s supposed to rain it dissapates before getting to my house. Makes me sad because the grass looks terrible and I can’t go down the steps without burning my feet.
Winter here in Shark Bay WA, but still lovely 20 degrees and sunny today! I moved to Aus 3 yrs ago (from the Netherlands that is) and can really miss those rainy days. But we had an extremely wet year so far on the WA coast and a very hot and humid summer (pretty much unbearable).
Love your posts Kay! More Dutch inspired food please :)
I’m in SC, and not to rub it in, but we’ve had a heat wave, with heat index over 115 in some parts of the state. I hope you get some sun!!
I woke up to a clear blue sky and sunshine this morning! Doubt it will last for long, but for now I’m enjoying it :)
I’m in Sri Lanka and here we don;t have 4 seasons visibly. Most of the time hot. These days it’s so hot and it continues till the end of Aug. But I hate it. U sweat like a pig all the time. U can;t walk on the street in the afternoon. Oh hell..
