The City Keeps on Going

Gouda

Just sharing one of my favorite city photos.

Whenever I walk downtown Gouda with my camera dangling around my neck, I somehow see things differently. Oh, I know it’s a gorgeous city with beautiful old buildings—even after living here for so long I can still see that—but I also notice things I would normally walk past without giving it a second look. That, and it makes me feel like a tourist, which I must admit is kinda fun.

Downside is I’m always afraid someone will yank the camera off my neck and run with it, you know? Not unthinkable, unfortunately. The city has become somewhat unsafe over the past few years, and that’s putting it nicely.

This bike immediately caught my eye. I had to photograph it. It’s not the bike that’s unsual—God knows we have a plethora of bikes on every corner of the street. It’s the simple advertising board for a hair salon I don’t even know they stored on the back of the bike. No flashy advertisement. Keep it simple, keep it real. That, to me, is the epitome of Gouda.

I just wish we had a skyline here. Kinda like New York. Which reminds me; we would like to have it back now, please!

What’s a typical street view of the place you live in?

    Considering I live in Cambridge with thousands of cyclists, very similar. ;)

    The channel entrance, a huge bridge and enormous ships going in and out!

    I like the processing too.
    I live  just outside of a small town that has quaint little shops. Alot of them closed down because of the economy though.
    You’ve given me a photo assignment this weekend. I’m going to take some pics of the area. I’m sure you won’t find it hard to believe that I have never taken any pics of our little town or mill pond.
    Thanks for the idea & thanks for sharing.

    I love the shot, it reminds me of one I have in my portfolio. Beautiful processing on this too!

    Orange County, CA – coastal desert landscape, peeks of the Pacific, lots of planned communities, and many Starbucks.

    @Mihai:

    There’s an awful lot of criminality here.  Even in the suburb I live in most shopkeepers close their stores eventually because they are constantly robbed at gunpoint.

    Wow. I was curious as to who exactly are the criminals (immigrants?), because I live in Utrecht, quite close by, and I don’t know of it being a dangerous city. Weird, but I hope it will get better, for the boy’s sake :)

    @Mihai:

    I have no idea who was hiding behind the ski mask of the 2 people who robbed the Marskramer at gunpoint only minutes after I left it with my son a few months ago. Could have been locals, could have been immigrants.

    I think Gouda is #2 in the list of cities with a high criminality rate.

    I love your photo!  It is so sad when an area has crime problems.  @ years ago I moved from the #1 per capita crime area in the U.S.  It’s such a blessing to live some place where feel safe.

    I’m surprised to hear that Gouda is becoming dangerous. It seems to me like such a quiet little town.

    Hi!  I live in Texas just west of the Dallas/Ft. Worth  (DFW) area in a town called Weatherford. (lots of history in this area about the old time cowboys!)  It’s also the “Cutting Horse Capital of the World”, so needless to say there are LOTS of horses around here.  We live in an equestrian community but not everyone has horses.  There is even a riding arena here where they hold “cuttings”..it is big business here!  I guess you have guessed we live out in the country, so it’s relatively quiet, no traffic and for the most part the neighbors are friendly.  Our view off our front porch is overlooking some rolling hills (houses studded here & there) and a tree line in the distance.  Our house faces the west and we have GORGEOUS sunsets here!  I am so jealous that you are such a good photographer but I have never taken the time to learn…I think it’s just a God-given talent!!  I stumbled across your website via Pinterest!  Love your blog and your recipes look devine!  Can’t wait to try them.  If you are ever interested in any recipes that are “Texas style” let me know!  Good luck and Stay safe!
