Easy BBQ Sauce

BBQ Sauce

The name says it all. This is a simple BBQ sauce that’s a snap to whip up and that you really need in your recipe repertoire. Fool-proof recipes that you can make in under 30 minutes are your friend, especially for those times you get company, want to slap a few ribs on the grill but don’t want to run to the store. No special skills or ingredients are needed for this sauce. It’s a perfect combination of acidity and sweetness. The maple syrup adds a lovely richness.

Ingredients:

1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
3 tbsp brown sugar
4 tbsp maple syrup
1 small onion
2 small garlic cloves
2 tbsp worcestershiresauce
1 tbsp sweet chili sauce
1 1/2 tbsp yellow mustard
1/4 cup water
juice of 1 lemon
2 tbsp oil
lemon zest
few tabasco shakes

Directions:

Finely mince the onion and mince or grate the garlic.
BBQ Sauce

Put it all in a saucepan, add the ketchup, apple cider vinegar and brown sugar. This is plenty sweet for me, but feel free to up the brown sugar.
BBQ Sauce

Add the maple syrup, it really adds pizzazz to the sauce. For the Dutchies among you, you can buy maple syrup at the Jumbo supermarket.
BBQ Sauce

Add the juice of 1 (medium) lemon, water, 2 tbsp worcestershiresauce, 1 tbsp sweet chili sauce, a few tabasco shakes and 2 tbsp oil.
BBQ Sauce

Next, add the yellow mustard and stir well.
BBQ Sauce

Season with salt and add a pinch of lemon zest, about 1/4 tsp, just for flavor and freshness.
BBQ Sauce

Simmer the sauce for 20 minutes, until it has cooked down. Smooth the sauce using a blender or immersion blender.
BBQ Sauce

This one is rich, creamy and tasty. Just sweet enough for me.
