Gouda: De Roode Leeuw

No, this isn’t even Kayotic Kitchen going Dutch! (pun intended). Though I can see why you might think that!

Here’s something I really, really wanted to show you. I planned on making this part of a special food posting, but because the food posting itself is turning out pretty photographic intense, I decided to just slap it up as a separate posting. That way the text also won’t end up in the print form. And it’s simply too pretty to leave it out all together.

Here’s where I go when I want to make a special bread recipe and need the very best ingredients possible.

When I want to buy special flour, or yeast, I go to De Roode Leeuw. The Red Lion. This mill is situated in the center of Gouda and is one of the oldest flour-mills of our country. Biggest part of the mills indoor work was demolished and used as firewood during the starvation winter back in 1944-’45. After a radical restoration the mill was reinstated as a flour-mill in 1985.

What makes this mill so special to me, is the fact it has the cutest little store right next to it. They’re not open on a daily basis, so if you ever end up here; I believe they’re open on Thursday and Saturday mornings.

When I want to make a high quality recipe, I buy my flour here. It’s the absolute best. They have a huge selection of different flours, and even sell unique ready-to-go mixes. Just add some water and you’re all set.

They sell so many things here, from instant yeast (the blue packages) and special mixes to dried papaya flakes. They also sell baking soda, which was something I didn’t even know! Having this blog makes me look at the things around me with different eyes, so I guess I have to thank you all for clearing my vision.

You can see the mill entrance through the old tiny store windows. Gives a really rustic feel to shopping there.

And here’s the guy running the mill. They didn’t even mind me barging in there with a camera, asking them to pose for me. He’s a fun guy!

But really, trust me when I say I’m going somewhere with this posting. Oh yes, I am.
