La Place Tuna Salad

La Place Tuna Salad

By far the best tuna (salad) sandwich you’ll ever sink your teeth into. There, I’ve said it. This is the tuna salad I paid good money for when I didn’t have the recipe yet; I thought it would be far more complex. They sell this beauty over at la Place—a lunchroom in the Netherlands that belongs to a chain of stores (V&D) that recently went bankrupt. Such a shame.

Anyway, it hits all the right spots with just the right amount of tuna. Might sound crazy, but I don’t really like tuna salads that are too tuna-y, if you get what I mean.

The textures in this salad will blow you away: it’s got freshness and sweetness from the apple, zing and crunch from minced onion and fresh chives. The umami part comes from the added tomato and the dressing is so simple yet so darn effective.

Try this one, it’s a crowd pleaser.

Ingredients:

bread of choice
1 can tuna, drained
1/2 onion, very finely minced (2 to 3 tbsp)
1 sweet and fresh apple, finely chopped (I used Jazz)
1 tomato, washed and finely chopped
2 tbsp fresh chives
handful finely chopped iceberg lettuce
3 heaping tbsp mayonnaise (preferably Hellmann’s)
1 heaping tbsp ketchup (preferably Heinz)
good pinch of salt and pepper

Directions:

This could not be any simpler. Just mix the mayo with the ketchup and add a good pinch of salt and pepper. You can also add a tsp of fresh lemon juice, it’s delicious!

Wash and (partly) peel the apple. I opted for Jazz apples because, well, I’m addicted to them. Finely chop them.

Finely mince the onion, and I mean finely: it’ll be gross with large chunks of onion. Do the same with the (washed) tomato and chives.
La Place Tuna Salad

Put the drained tuna in a bowl. I used tuna canned in water.

Add all your chopped ingredients. I like lots of onion so I go for 3 tbsp! Spoon the dressing in there as well and give it a stir.

You can make the tuna salad in advance and store it in the fridge. Stir in the chopped iceberg lettuce right before serving, though.

Man, I love this salad to bits.

It’ll taste fantastic no matter what kind of bread you use. My personal favourites are focaccia or small ciabatta.

Tip: if you’re not like me, in permanent diet-mode, and you want a one-on-one with the la Place version, you might want to double the amount of tuna and sauce in this recipe.

1/2 onion, very finely minced (2 to 3 tbsp)
1 sweet and fresh apple, finely chopped (I used Jazz)
1 tomato, washed and finely chopped

good pinch of salt and pepper

Directions
Mix the mayo with the ketchup and add a good pinch of salt and pepper. You can also add a few drops of lemon juice! Wash the tomato and apple, partly peel the apple so you et a few red specks here and there, and finely chop both. Finely mince the onion and chop the chives. Put the drained tuna in a bowl, add all your chopped ingredients and the dressing and stir well. You can make this in advance and store it in the fridge. Stir in the chopped iceberg lettuce right before serving.
