Summer Steak Sandwich

Summer Steak Sandwich

Nope, this sandwich is not going to get you any marriage proposals. No 5 carat diamond rings. No serenades, or even professions of love. Nothing of that. Just dirty dishes, a messy kitchen and a lot of happy faces.

Did I mention the dirty dishes already? Because your family will devour this and will send you straight back into the kitchen for more. Provided you’re willing to do that, of course.

So if anything, it will give you more work. There’s just no magic here. Only an incredibly good, yet simple enough sandwich, that is ridiculously easy to make but tastes like you’ve slaved over it for hours!

Ingredients:

4 buns
4 round steaks
lettuce
1 large onion
7oz mushrooms
3 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp fresh ginger
1/2 garlic clove
pepper and salt
2 tsp brown sugar
1 tbsp mirin
1/8 to 1/4 tsp sesame oil
salt and pepper
pinch dried chili flakes (or cayenne pepper)
butter

Directions:

*Doing one steak here as an example, but the topping should be enough for four steak sandwiches.

I’m using soy sauce. You could also use sweet soy sauce (Kecap) and ditch the sugar and mirin.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Add the grated ginger, garlic and a small pinch of dried chili flakes or a little cayenne pepper.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Stir in the brown sugar.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Add the mirin and the sesame oil, stir to combine and set it aside.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Slice the onion in half-quarts. Clean up the mushrooms and slice them, too.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Season the steaks with salt and pepper, but keep in mind we’ll also add soy sauce, so I only seasoned one side with salt.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Heat some butter and cook the steaks. I gave mine 3 minutes on each side.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Only flip them once and whatever you do, don’t pierce them with a fork or squeeze them with tongs. Leave those steaks alone, you hear me!
Summer Steak Sandwich

Transfer the steaks to a plate and cover them with foil. We need to let them rest for 5 minutes to let the juices settle.

Gives us time to sauté the onions for about 3 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook until the mushrooms have softened up.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Pour the soy mix in with the veggies. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer for a minute or two, three.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Slice the steaks.
Summer Steak Sandwich

The veggies should be done by now.
Summer Steak Sandwich

Top your buns of choice with some butter, lettuce, the steak slices and a nice scoop of the vegetables and sauce.

Yup, lots of dirty dishes, but it’ll be worth it. I promise you that much!

Directions
Mix the soy sauce with the grated ginger, garlic and a small pinch of dried chili flakes (or a little cayenne pepper), brown sugar, sesame oil and miring. Slice the onion and mushrooms.

Season the steaks with salt and pepper, but keep in mind we’ll also add soy sauce, so I only seasoned one side with salt. Heat some butter and cook the steaks., flipping them only once. I gave mine 3 minutes on each side (1″ thick steak) and it was medium.

Transfer the steaks to a plate and cover them with foil. We need to let them rest for 5 minutes to let the juices settle. Gives us time to sauté the onions for about 3 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook until the mushrooms have softened up.

Ha, ik zocht voor vanavond iets met rundvlees dat snel klaar te maken is en een beetje pittig smaakt. Dit wordt het dan maar. :)

      1. Thanks! Fixed it.

I thought ‘barbie’ was more an Australian thing to say than an American? :)

Yum! Will definitely try this for next week!  I would also put this atop some greens for a salad.

      1. No idea why that is. Asked about 5 people and all of them can see the photos. Really strange.

      Kay,
Working fine now–can see everything.  Couldn’t see the pics at Flickr either so it was probably a problem at their end.
These look great and will probably do them this weekend.
      Thanks.

      1. Just to make sure, I put the photos in there again. Was probably some sort of Flickr twitch… happens now and then. Glad everything is working for you now.
