Sesame Roasted Broccoli

Sesame Roasted Broccoli

You won’t find many broccoli recipes on my site because, quite frankly, I just don’t like it. There. I’ve said it.

Neither does my son, but that’s probably my fault. Sure, I’m okay with broccoli deeply hidden in a casserole, drowned in an almost indecent amount of cheese sauce, and hardly recognisable as a vegetable much less as broccoli, but broccoli as is… nope. Not my thing.

When a friend of mine, Vivienne, pointed out a roasted broccoli recipe it occurred to me that roasting was probably the only method I hadn’t tried yet.

And then my eye was drawn to the bottle of Kewpie spicy sesame oil dressing in my fridge and I figured… why not? Gave it a shot and even though it didn’t convert me, it did turn the broccoli into something I could even enjoy eating.

Really fast and flavourful side-dish!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 pound broccoli
4 tbsp spicy sesame dressing
1 1/2 tsp sugar
pinch of kosher salt

Garnish: sesame seeds (roasted)

Directions:

The broccoli. We’ll also be using the stalk, so don’t toss it, okay!

If you’ve washed your broccoli, make sure it’s completely dry before you move on with the recipe.

Cut the broccoli into big florets and peel the tough outer layer. Peel the outer layer of the stalk as well and turn it into match sticks. Put everything in a big bowl.

I love this dressing. Too bad I can’t buy it in NL, Ellen was sweet enough to mail me two bottles.

No Kewpie dressing available? No worries; this dressing works beautifully as well! Maybe even better. Just add a little more sesame oil.

Pour in the sesame dressing.

Add the sugar and a pinch of kosher salt. Get in there with your hands and mix it up. Make sure all broccoli has some of the dressing and sugar on it.

Line a baking sheet or roasting tray with parchment paper, spread the broccoli on top of it.

Roast the broccoli in a preheated oven at 225Cº (435Fº) for 13 to 15 minutes. The sugar will help the caramelising process giving a serious amount of extra flavour.

Garnish the broccoli with the sesame seeds.

This was surprisingly easy, fast and delicious. Even for a broccoli hater!

I’m definitely going to try this one! Sounds much better than my steaming broccoli method :)
