Special shout out to Wendy, for giving me the golden rice tip in a desperate plea for help. Why didn’t I think of this before? Okay, so I spent half the week vacuum cleaning and I had to pick rice out of every crack and crevice, but it was definitely worth it.
Decided we needed room to play. So I dragged an old bed drawer downstairs, tossed half a bag of cheap rice in there, added his farm, farm animals and Bob the Builder cars and told him “Go play before mommy needs therapy“.
And so he did, and he didn’t stop playing with it until today, when I kicked him and his Skippy ball out of the house as soon as the first rays of sunshine filtered through the window and hit the back yard.
Wendy, I owe you one!
Thanks everyone, for giving me so many ideas to work with!

You told him to play with food :O I foresee regrets at the dinner table in the near future.
Just kidding, great idea. Like an indoor, less messy sandbox!
@Ilse:
there was no way I would have dared doing something like this two years ago! He would have totally misbehaved every time we ate rice :)
He had a blast with it!
I’ll bet the rice is easily vacuumed up :)
@Debbie@50centlove:
As a mother of a son who has a thing for sand boxes, I can assure you that this is 20.000 times more easily vacuumed than sand :)
Great idea! It does look like alot of fun.
Did you play in it too? It’s the cheapest and best stress reducer ever. I always stick my feet in and push the rice around with them.
@Mandee Jo:
We’ll often play together, I’m especially his victim when it comes to pretend play with his farm animals.
I really dislike feeling sand between my fingers or in my hands, but love digging my hands into a bag of rice. So, that’s actually a pretty good idea. I’m gonna try it.
great idea! You can also have a box with it, hide little things and have him dig for treasure, or be an archeologist, you can also use macaroni, the textures are fun
textures are so fun with kids. you can paint with bubble wrap, play in oobleck (cornstarch and water), make flubber, it’s all awesome.
Kay, if you’re still in need of therapy, this video might help you as well :)

Glad he liked it! Consider it pay back for all the great dinner ideas. Hang in there… spring is coming!
