One More Staple

Just in case you were wondering where I vanished to and why my postings have been a bit slow this week. Here’s the before.

KAY_9550

These are only a few of the 8.7654 million carpet staples I’ve now removed from the wooden stairs with just the help of a teeny tiny screwdriver. Along with tons of glue and old carpet. I’m in my own private hell here!

If you’ve ever lived through a staircase make-over, you know what I’m going through right now. One staircase down. One left to go. Good thing, because my hands are starting to look look like they’ve been in a cheese grater.

Jayden doesn’t mind us working our butts off. He’s way too busy painting his dinosaurs anyway. Every now and then he’ll come over and say “You’re doing great, mom“, and quickly he runs back into the living room.

The reason I’m posting is this is that I want to pick your brain for a moment.

Any ideas for what to do with the white staircase wall? I used to have photos all over the wall, but I want to do something a little more unique and fun this time. I just can’t seem to come up with a good idea.

Different sized/colored mirrors on the wall might be a good option

      1. I never even thought about using mirrors, but that would also make it appear bigger, more spacey.

I don’t have any specific ideas, but one of the best sites I know of for inspiration is Apartment Therapy. It’s an amazing site. I think if you prowl around on there for a bit you might find an idea you love. Good luck! Have fun!

What about wallpapering it?  Textured, contrasting colour or custom made using with prints of either images or your favourite quotes?

what if you put up some random art decals  - there are some pretty cool ideas here. Also you can change it up if you decide you want something else.
This would work well with mirrors too.

What about a collage of broken pieces like mirrors, colored glass and terra cotta… pieces of anytihing that’s your favorite.  Eye-catching colors and images, perhaps to eventually create a total, ultimate image.  Understand?  Very exciting, looking forward to seeing what manifests.

Ugh, I am considering redoing our stairwell and *gulp* pulling up the carpet, I hope I don’t have as many carpet staples!
There is a blog that I really enjoy that has a lot ideas, check it out http://www.younghouselove.com/

      1. I had no idea just how many staples would come out from underneath. Good thing because had I known, I probably would have kept postponing it, but the carpet was old and run-down.
I love websites like that that give me new, fresh ideas. Thanks for sharing, and let me know when you’re gonna redo the stairwell :)

Ouch! My fingers hurt just seeing all those staples.

Sorry I can’t offer any advice on decorating. It takes weeks of looking through catalogs, magazines and websites before I even begin to know what I want to do. Besides, you wouldn’t listen to someone who paints a wall red against your advice ;)

      PS..smart kid

While I like the idea of mirrors, I think I’d feel dizzy going down a circular staircase with mirrors on the wall. Are you replacing the carpet, or doing something different with them? I have carpeted stairs, too, and I’d like to do something different, but have not found any reasonable alternatives.

Stairwells are usually dark. Paint it white again and use small spotlights to create light pattern on the wall.

Hi from Virginia!  I feel for you.  I have yanked up stapes from sub-flooring in our house before we moved in to have hardwood floors installed on the first floor. I did have and used channel-lock pliers and it made it a little easier to pull after prying up a little with the screwdriver.   Also did it in my mother’s home when she had new carpet installed.  Guess they didn’t want the padding to go ANYWHERE!  WIsh I had an idea for your stair walls, but alas, mine are bare too (except for the cobwebs way up in the corners that can’t be reached without risk to life and limb).  Good luck capturing an idea!

When I was growing up, my best friend’s Mom was a painter. They had a staircase going from their dining room down to the basement, and her Mom painted a mural from the ceiling of the dining room, down to the floor of the basement on the wall next to the staircase. The mural was of a forest scene with all kinds of animals and little forest gnomes living in it, with the dining room floor being even with the forest floor. As you descended the stairs, the mural went underground, and she had painted the homes of all the little burrowing animals that lived underground. She had somewhere around 40 animals hidden in the scene, and we used to love to try and find all of them. So much fun!
