Ode to The Onion

Intro

Does this need an introduction? The Onion, the whole onion and nothing but the onion! And here’s is my tribute to it. Onions rule my world and dominate my kitchen. Love ‘em to death. I figured I’d try and see if I could photograph them in a way that would bring out the artistic side of them instead of just chopping them up.

I like how this red onion shot turned out so much I’m having it printed for my kitchen. I went for a moody and dark setup, pretty different from my normal style. Choose a B&W processing with only a slight hint of color that matches my wall. I like how it turned out.

In case you want to print it as well, here’s the high resolution print version.

Onions dominate my kitchen too Kay! Always have a large supply on hand. I don’t know how people  can cook without them. They are such a vital flavor agent to so many dishes. I can somewhat understand some people’s dislike for the taste of raw onion, but cooked they take on a whole different flavor. Anyway, I love the picture. Where did you place the onion for this shot? Is that your hardwood floor or a cutting board? I just love the rustic look!!

      @ Andilynn:

It’s actually the bottom of a really old serving tray!

Recently my son asked me if I could stop using onions in everything I make. I said, “hummm…NO”

Why do kids dislike onion so much? I’ve known kids that pick out every single piece of onion in a dish! (Luckily not my own!)
Nothing tastes the same without onion. I recently had a weeks break fron garlic (just to see if I could- I use so much!)  but a week without onion?- No way!

      @ Vanessa:

I’ve seen so many kids do the same thing that I feared my own son would turn out like that, too. Instead he loves onion and anything onion related. Good boy :)

I can’t live without onions and garlic. The aroma while they are sauteing is heavenly…not to mention what they actually do for flavor!
      Love your pic.

Never thought I’d say anything like this, but that is one beautiful onion!  If you ever decide to photograph chocolate  (is chocolate pretty enough?) … please let me know!  : )
