Netherlands in World Cup Final

Beesie

And so it is, we won 3-2 over Uruguay and have now reached the World Cup final where a 32-year wait ends. YES! Let me gloat for just one short moment.

Okay, I’m done now.

Oh boy, what a game. Aside from the fact it’s really no punishment to watch all those darn sexy guys run around a field all sweaty (I’m a girl. Sue me) for 90 minutes, the game itself kept me at the edge of my seat, biting my nails, yelling, cussing, cheering, twittering and generally going berserk all at once… until Sneyder made that goal! That one brilliant goal! Whew, those Uruguayans sure shut down our defense for most of the 2nd half and didn’t give an inch, but we still won.

There were fireworks all over Gouda right after the game, and people were partying in the streets. Not to mention the sound of 3 million vuvuzela’s in the city. Disclaimer: if you read anything in your local newspaper about weighted bodies floating in a river nearby Gouda, it wasn’t me. I swear! No really!

Our guys now won 10 straight and are unbeaten in their last 25 games, just how amazing is that? I still can’t believe it. We’re such a teeny tiny country, a speck on the map, and what they are doing over there is so grand. No matter what happens from hereon, no matter who wins that dang cup, let it be known that I am terribly, crazy proud of what our guys are achieving there in South Africa. How far they came and how determined they are. And now… now IT MIGHT JUST HAPPEN!

Thanks to all of you who were watching the game last night and cheering our boys on all over the world. You guys rock!

Hi, I’ve been investigating Dutch food after becoming obsessed by some truffle brie that was bought in a shop called l’Amuse in Netherlands – if you want to read about my taste experience of this fab cheese, please visit http://grazingkate.blogspot.com
I shall follow your lovely blog now!  And congrats in the footie last night – it must be a great feeling.

I love your Beesie photo! So cute! I had them in my hair last night and wrapped around my orange scarf, and a couple more were tied around my wrist. They’ve become my good-luck charms! So exciting to see the Dutch team doing so well! We’re in the finals!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you give us some ideas for Dutch food to serve at a party? I’m having a World Cup party on Sunday with thematic food and find myself at a loss for what to make.

    @Alison:

That’s gonna be hard because typically Dutch food isn’t something you would serve at parties. I’d probably make bitterballen and spicy mini meatballs in peanut sauce, things like that.

Is Beesie a mascot? Is there a story?

    @ Sarah:

Not really a story. Every time there’s some sort of sports event, our supermarkets hand out these mascot type of things in orange and in the colors of our flag to the kids. You get one of these with every E15 worth in groceries. It’s mainly for the children.

I guess Bitterballen and Gouda. I’m also wanting herring as a pre-game snack. I wonder where I can get some of that here in New York. I stumbled upon this website and will look forward to your bitterballen recipe!

hi…im soo glad Netherlands is going forward to the finals. Im from South Africa..and I must tell you the world cup has been amazing for our country.
I have met with soo many foreigners that have come over for the various matches…but by far the Dutch have been the friendliest and happiest. You can spot a dutch supporter a mile away, the colours are so vibrant, they are always singing …just so jolly.
Way to go Holland…..go all the way!!!

Hola Kay, Imagine what kind of evening we will be having here in Andalucia! My sister and her kids will be with us to cheer the Dutch on and my son will probably be the only one making an awful lot of noise with the Vuvuzela that they promised to bring him (they are not for sale here, just a lot of spanish flags and shawls).
    Have a great evening!

Well, maybe not but, at this level of play it is all about winning! (The public pressure is overwhelming to succeed – fueled by the media in my humble opinion). We can all think about plays/actions/decisions that should not have happened. There were some referee calls that could/should have gone other ways. There were A LOT of missed goals by both sides. A lot of very good defense on both sides. On the other hand, 1-0 after 2 hours is pretty impressive.

    Maybe next time.

    @ John:

In all honesty, I do felt Spain was better. They deserved to win. I was less than charmed by how dirty Holland played, at that level and playing this dirty? Nah.

That referee? I can see why the man was sent home during the European Championship and well, imho he should never enter a soccer field again. He never should have been able to referee this game in the first place, or any other WC game. So many poor calls on his side. Missed corners, offside play that was allowed. Apparently he’s known for that and the ‘flute recital’ he received at the end was completely justified. Seriously, 10 yellow and 1 red card? The man single handedly killed the game.

Quite frankly I didn’t expect them to win, so I wasn’t dissapointed. Just annoyed by the incapable referee. I’m really proud of them for making it to the final game. They did good, they did us proud.
