Thanks for the answer. I have no idea what went wrong either. :(
The only things I can think of are: maybe my oven has too hot (I don't have any temperature indication so I guessed a 'middle-low' position). Also, looking back at your pictures, the ones with the spices show a lot more spice than I put, it looks like my spoon was a lot smaller.
I will try this again, hopefully with even more delicious results :D

@ Dira:

First time I've heard this, actually. Not sure what went wrong for you, but the quantities are right. I have made these myself many times and others have as well, see the comments. You can find the recipe online quite a bit after I posted it and for everyone they seem to have come out right.

So I'm tempted to think the problem isn't in the quantities but maybe in your oven or something else.

Cooked these, they were quite good but somehow I think the liquids quantity wrong - 3 spoons of oil & the spices were not enough for 2 onions (no extra marinade to pour in the pot) and the 2 spoons of water evaporated and the onions burned on the bottom. They were good, but not as good as they seem from looking at your pictures :D

Hi Kay,
Add my name to the list of people grateful for the introduction to these seductive onions! I've been making them all summer long, just now published a column featuring your onion recipe (http://www.kitchenparade.com/2010/10/moroccan-onions-mezgaldi-spiced-onions.html), also the launch of a new series on Kitchen Parade that showcases favorite food blogs. Thanks so much!
