Is it a Bird? No! It’s Carnival!

Carnaval1

J-man goes to Catholic school and today they’re celebrating carnival, just before the onset of Lent. All dressed up, of course. He was wide awake and ready to roll at 6am. I need a coffee I.V drip, stat.

One of the most beautiful traditions of the Dutch carnival though, at least at the school my son goes to, is bringing the children to the retirement home in a lively, energetic and colorful procession.

Not sure whose faces lit up more; those of the children’s or the elderly people. Having tiny ones celebrate carnival along with elderly people is a match made in festival heaven for both.

With his bizarro love for animals—still think it’s all that weird stuff I ate during my pregnancy—I knew he’d pick an animal costume. Must confess that I got slightly worried when we arrived at the store and noticed there were no dinosaur or lion costumes.

Ever seen a 4-year-old curled up on the floor in fetal position yelling at the top of his lungs that he wants to be a Deinonychus? No? It ain’t pretty.

He fell in love with this costume the moment he laid eyes on it. Dumbo saved the day. Took a few quick snapshots before he left this morning.

Look, it’s my son… the Elephant Boy!

    Haha cute! Definately better than the standard knight or cowboy. Or at least that was standard in my days of elementary school.

    Awe! Mardi Gras, as we call it in South Mississippi. My child just came home with her beaded masquerade mask from her pre-school. I will be taking her to the parades on Fat Teusday to catch beads, doubloons, and moon pies.

    @Elizabethk:

    The last time I made the mistake of telling him he was sooooo cute, he was angry for 15 minutes straight, telling me over and over again how he wasn’t cute but he was tough. And he was a real man, and he was already 4 and no longer a baby …. and then he curled up in my lap to watch tv as I stroked his hair  :)
