That's how my mom used to do it. She would actually made the well with the gravy spoon! I do it for my son, too :)

This blog brings back so many great food memories from my childhood. I grew up in Canada to parents who had immigrated. At the time I didn't fully appreciate my mother's cooking, my friends didn't eat stamppot, boiled onions on potatoes or have soup with miniture meatballs every Sunday, and they really couldn't understand why I had chocolate sprinkles on my sandwiches( Even as an adult I still can't get enough)!
When we had stamppot we would mound in on our plates and make a well in the center, that got filled with dutch gravy and you ate it from the outside in dipping each fork full into the gravy as you went.
Oh so good!
Thanks for an amazing site, will be back often.

My aunt, who is a wonderful cook, always puts a handful of oatmeal into the mash.
Struck me as daft at first, but it somehow gives the 'stamppot' a little extra.

I made this mash today (minus the red peppers since I'm allergic) with the Dutch meatballs. Killer meal! My husband's Grandma Haak (who died many years ago and immigrated to Michigan from the Netherlands in her early 30's) would have been so proud of us...eating all Dutch deliciousness. The way the meatballs were cooked reminded us both of a recipe we call "Grandma Haak meat" which is cubed steak quick seared in hot browned butter. We have always served it with mashed potatoes--but I think it will be served with this from now on.

I just discovered this site late last week, but spent this whole evening reading recipes here. I will be making carrots, focaccia, onion bread soup...there aren't enough hours or days in the week!

You are a blast, with gorgeous pics and awesome recipes! Keep it coming!

I was searching for a kale recipe and found this. I like to adapt, and it got me thinking, so cooked the potatoes in the pressure cooker with onions and garlic and the kale thrown in with some sea salt. Drained, then Pecorino cheese added at the end and mixed with a whisk, so a bit sloppy (my children call most of my food 'slop' but it always tastes ok!). Will fry the leftovers (not much) for breakfast tomorrow with a poached egg on top. Thanks for the inspiration.

Sarah, you had me smiling. Traditionally this is served with (soft) boiled eggs, either served on the side or mashed in! I wouldn't go for fried eggs, though.
