Crazy Pita

Close your mouth and stop staring! That’s really melted cheese you see there! But what’s the red stuff?

What better way to test my new lens (Nikon 28-105) than to show you my completely bizarre snacking habits in the shortest posting ever. This is the pita I’ve been snacking on ever since I was a teenager. It seems like a strange combination, but really, trust me … it’s so good. Very kid-friendly, even though my little man can’t eat this; he’s highly allergic to strawberries.

Now I refuse to believe I’m alone in this, so ‘fess up. What crazy things do you snack on?

Ingredients:

Pita
cheese
strawberry jelly

Directions:

No better start to a recipe than slicing an indecent amount of slightly aged Gouda cheese.

Pita bread. I always keep a bunch of these in the freezer. Love to fill them with stir fried chicken fillet and crispy vegetables, little chili sauce on top. Real easy dinner!

Cut the pita bread in half way to form a pocket. Don’t cut it too far, though, or the cheese will drip out.

Put as much cheese in there as you possible can. Stuff it! Come on now, don’t spoil the fun, it’s my junk-food Friday! Put it in a toaster for several minutes, until the pita bread is all warm and crispy and the cheese has melted.

Once the cheese has melted, open the pita bread a little and spoon a tbsp strawberry jelly in there. That’s it.

This is the best flavor combination ever! I kid you not!

KAY!!! This is the best flavor in the world! I just recently had tried adding jelly to my grilled cheese. I saw a show about it on the Food Network, and well… Now I am hooked! This looks crazy good! Can’t wait to try it!

It’s really good, Amy … there’s something so enticing about the combination melted cheese & jelly. I also like how fast you can whip this up.

New kid on the blog, I’ve only tried it with Gouda cheese so far. I’m guessing you can do this with most cheeses.

Wkf, you’re bringing back memories here! I used to grill a chicken fillet, melt brie on top of it and cover it with slightly sauteed & warm fruit such as tiny pieces banana, strawberries, peach. It was divine. Haven’t prepared that in ages … it’s high time :)

Funny, this brings back memories of grilled cheese with jam on top.

And, while not a snack, after having salmon with a raspberry glaze at a restaurant, I tried a bit of homemade raspberry jam on salmon – yum! I just put a bit of jam over and stuck it under the broiler (grill) for a bit.

I can’t think of an unusual thing I snack on…I am a boringly normal snacker I guess!

My Mom used to take slabs of cheddar cheese (or even Kraft American Singles if that’s all we had in the fridge) and slather it with strawberry jam. She didn’t even bother to heat it! She just ate it like that. Of course, my grandmother used to pour evaporated milk over jello, too. We’re a weird family. I’ll definitely have to try it toasted! With gouda!

I’d eat it, Nicole! Strawberry jelly and cheese were made for each other!

Oooh! I might have to try this one. My BF really loves bologna and grape jelly. It has to be grape! He rolls it up like a cigar and eats it. I tried it once (I’m not a huge fan of bologna) and it wasn’t bad!!

This made me laugh as it totally reminds me of what I call my husband’s (yes, my husband, not me) pregnancy sandwich: bread, peanut butter, pickles and mayonnaise.

I think your sandwich looks way more appetizing. Beautiful photos.

How fun is this – Great reminder that Pita is so versatile. I have not thought about using a pita in a very long time.. {{adding to grocery list}} They also are wonderful in the morning to stuff with eggs and bacon!!!

Hmmm… the only weird food I can think of that I eat is I like my pancakes with pnut butter and maple syrup on them. As soon as I post this comment I know I’ll think of something else too, of course. :-) My hubby thinks its weird and gross, but it’s awesome. His family always eats liver sausage and grape jelly sandwiches. GROSS!!!! He hates them now, but seriously makes me gag–his dad thinks its funny so likes to wave them under my nose when he’s eating them. YUCK! That sandwich does look awesome. :-) It’s pretty too! I just made fresh strawberry jam.. one of my fav things.

Hmmm… haven’t tried cheese and strawberry jelly before, but we grew up eating strawberry jelly on mashed potato pancakes. So, I’m willing to believe it’s good! I’ll have to try it sometime.

When we were kids, we went camping and my buddy’s dad made us tuna fish, (with onions, celery, mayo…the standard mix..) with swiss cheese and strawberry preserves on whole wheat. I thought he was hitting the beers a little early, but they were GREAT! Who wudda thunk?
Wierd snack?…my son and I like teriyaki nori (seaweed) strips…get them at the Asian market..

This reminds me of that cheese spread appetizer that is sooooo divine on crackers….I think i remember the ingredients——grated sharp cheese, grated onion, cayenne pepper, chopped pecans, mayo– mix and form it into a ball or whatever shape you desire (have done it in the shape of a heart for Valentines Day before) and refrigerate. When you are ready to serve cover it with strawberry jam and serve with crackers…..It is the BEST!!! Try it at your own risk…it is ADDICTIVE!!

Sunnie, that sounds heavenly. Cheese and onions are already a killer combination, but everything combined like that …. wow, definitely have to try it. Do you happen to know the exact quantities?

I don’t think this is crazy at all. Fruit and cheese go so wonderfully together. Whenever I make quesadillas or grilled cheese, I always layer it with some sliced apple or pear. I’ll have to try the strawberry variation. Thanks for sharing!

    Peanut Butter and Bacon…mmmm.
When we were little and my mother was not looking, my grandmother would make us a speculaas sandwich. That is white bread with butter and two speculaas (Dutch gingerbread) cookies in between. We thought we hit the lottery!

Randi, I still eat the speculaas sandwich. Only with fresh, white bread and slathered with butter, of course :)

    Speculaas aren’t gingerbread cookies, though!

Lol, your post brought a smile to my face this morning as this is also an old family favourite which my father was brought up on after the war in London, though thinkn in those days it was canned cheese, yuk!
I have yet to try it toasted in pita though, don’t know why I never thought of this. I shall add this to my list of easy kids party food so thanks for the tip.
As to my weird food fancies, I am rather partial to a banana smeared with vegemite, sounds disgusting I know but it is absolutely lovely. Is this an Aussie blog? can’t remember, oh well, if not then you wont have a clue what vegemite is…its a weird black sandwich spread that is like I don’t know, beef stock based??? Like marmite??? oh well, whatever it is its good. Actually, spreading the banana with strawberry jam would be nice too I think………..
5 mins later….yep, just had one for breakky.

OMG, I was just telling my family the other day how great cheese and jam are together, and that I started eating them together when I was a teenager in Holland. And I have been craving this lately but I have no Gouda on hand and it’s truly the best cheese. I may have to run to the store!! Thank you for trying your new lens and fulfilling my food fantasies!! :) And speculaas sandwich, yum!! I really enjoy your blog and your photography is wonderful!
