Strawberries in March

You can buy produce out of season these days. At supermarkets you can get most fruits and vegetables all-year round. Yuck. Watery and flavorless strawberries in March. Asparagus in December. So wrong. Even restaurants use ingredients that really shouldn’t be available. Not only do you sacrifice a lot of flavour, but it’s also crazy expensive to buy out-of-season produce. So what vegetables are in season for April?   Beets Cauliflower…

    Red Hot Chili Peppers

And other peppers, but I kinda like the name. Finally dried the last batch of home-grown peppers. Took 2 full days to dry these babies because I was determined to dry them whole. Would you believe my pepper plants are full of new peppers again—including the jalapeño plants. Seems crazy with temperatures below freezing point at night. My jar has a mix of whole-dried Madame Jeanette (They’re always yellow. If…

      Peppadry

Now and then I’ll think I have a great idea. More often than not these ideas blow up in my face, but they’re fun little experiments. Having said that: this was definitely one of my brighter ideas. Not sure if you’ve noticed my deep-seated love for peppadew peppers? They’re these little bright red South African jewels. Jalapeño Powder

There I was, six months after starting Project Jalapeño, having more of those green little suckers than I could eat in a lifetime. After all the work I put into growing them, I sure wasn’t going to let them go to waste, so I thought of ways to keep them. I already froze a batch—chopped and whole—but quickly found they get a little mushy upon thawing. No biggie, you won’t…

          Mad Baking Skills

Quick shot because, really, this makes me such a proud mom. The kiddo wanted to bake a cake all week long… just my luck. Today I told him to go right ahead and bake it. And he did… he made it almost by himself. Not bad for a 6-year-old. Not bad at all. It’s rich, moist and totally decadent. I wish I could say he’s got his baking skills from me,…

            Show Me Your Spices

Rainy day, and we’re all done with Spongebob monopoly, so I figured today is as good a day as any to let you peek inside my spice cabinets. You know, I wasn’t kidding when I told you—several times, I think—that they are filled to the brim with whatever spices you can think of, and then some.   Clearly I have issues. Deep-seated issues. I’m well aware of that…. In my…
