Barraquito

This will probably bring back memories for those of you who vacationed in Tenerife, Canary islands.

Barraquito: a sweet coffee drink that combines creamy condensed milk with a shot of espresso, licor 43 (cuarenta y tres) and frothed milk. It’s so darn good.

I was reminded of this drink when I was watching Koffietijd (Coffee time—a morningshow on Dutch tv) a week ago. They made a smaller and more dessert-like version that had me running out the door for booze at 10am. Not bad, I say.

Creamy and rich, with just enough alcohol to make it interesting, but not nearly enough to get you hanging from a chandelier. Perfect for Easter!

Ingredients:

1 tbsp sweetened condensed milk
1 full tbsp licor 43
about 1/2 a shot espresso
frothed milk (made with whole milk)

Directions:

I’m using licor 43, but you can choose another vanilla-flavoured liquor as well.

Desert glasses work perfect for these amounts.

Pour the sweetened condensed milk into the glass. Try not to hit the sides.
Barraquito

Warm the licor 43 (I nuked it for a few seconds) and pour it on top of the condensed milk.
Barraquito

Gently spoon about 3 tbsp foam on top of the liqor.
Barraquito

Those layers are starting to show!
Barraquito

Very gently pour in some of the warm milk, a tbsp or two.
Barraquito

Now carefully pour the espresso (in a steady stream) into the glass. I use only 1/2 a shot espresso for myself, but add as much or as little as you like.
Barraquito

Top the coffee with a little more foam and a sprinkling of grated lime peel, or some cocoa powder as I like to do.
Barraquito

Drink, enjoy and be happy!

    1 tbsp licor 43
    about 1/2 a shot espresso
frothed milk (made with whole milk)

Directions
Warm the licor 43. Pour the sweetened condensed milk into the glass and try not to hit the sides. Dessert glasses work really well. Pour the warm liquor on top of the condensed milk. Gently spoon about 3 tbsp foam on top of the liqor and gently pour in a few tbsp warm milk. Do the same with the espresso and top the coffee with a little more foam and a sprinkling of grated lime peel, or some cocoa powder as I like to do.
