You’d think it’s easy for a garlic lover to come up with this, but it took me a long, long time to perfect my garlic sauce (hangs head in shame). But all was well again after I found this magic combo. I’ve been preparing it like this for several years now, so it’s definitely a tried and true recipe. The men in my life—all three of them—mutually agree this garlic sauce is the most incredible thing in the world. Men are so easy to please, it’s pathetic!

Hamburgers, kabobs, crusty bread, grilled chicken, literally anything goes with this sauce. I make my garlic sauce with a special ingredient, though. One that makes it a tad fresher and lighter.

Do feel free to share your families favorite sauce recipe as well. It doesn’t have to be a garlic sauce, but it would sure be fun to get one thread with lots of sauce recipes to fall back on during BBQ season, wouldn’ t it!

Ingredients:

6 tbsp mayonnaise
3 tbsp Greek yogurt
1/8 tsp curry powder
fresh lemon juice
1 large garlic clove
drop of oil
onion powder
Tabasco
chives
pepper
salt

Directions:

Dump 6 slightly heaping tbsp mayonnaise—I’ve used a low fat mayo—in a bowl.

Here’s my secret ingredient; Greek yogurt. Take my word for it; it does amazing things to the sauce. It richens it, makes it fresher and almost lighter. It just works. You can use a low fat Greek yogurt for this as well. Add 3 heaping tbsp.

I’m so addicted to the mayonnaise/yogurt combination.

Grate 2 medium or one large garlic clove and stir it in.

Add 1/8 to 1/4 tsp curry powder, lotsa black pepper, a touch of onion powder and salt to taste.

Squeeze in some fresh lemon juice, a tiny drop of olive oil and a few drops Tabasco. Stir to combine and check the seasoning.

And last but definitely not least, to get some crispy greens as well as a mild onion flavor in there, finely chop some chives. When I don’t have chives on hand, I’ll add some dried parsley and a little extra onion powder. Works great, too.

This sauce is seriously addictive. But I’m prone to addiction anyway. Food-wise that is, mind you, I’m not that Dutch. Let me know what you think of it when you decide to give it a try, okay!

You have the most amazing recipes. This sounds like another winner.

We always fall back on this recipe from a southern foodsite.

•1 tablespoon butter
•1/4 cup finely chopped onion
•1 1/2 cups ketchup
•1/4 cup chili sauce
•3 t o 4 tablespoons brown sugar
•3 to 4 tablespoons molasses
•2 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
•1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
•1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
•1 tablespoon liquid hickory smoke flavoring
•1/2 teaspoon garlic powder or granulated garlic
•1/2 teaspoon salt
•1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
•1 teaspoon chili powder
•dash cayenne pepper, or to taste

Cook onions until soft. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer for about 15 minutes.

@Marlon:

Sounds great, but unfortunately I can’t buy liquid hickory smoke flavoring in the Netherlands!

You have the most lovely presentation — I love your dishes! The sauce looks delicious too. :)

Kay, the British/American food store here in Utrecht carries the liquid smoke. I bought a bottle of it and Grandma’s molasses just so I can make my own bbq sauce (which is similar to the one Marlon posted). You never need much, so a bottle will last for years.

I’ll definitely have to make your recipe for garlic sauce, instead of always buying the premade stuff. I love it and use it on everything, but my boyfriend doesn’t like the aftertaste. I’m sure fresh-made won’t be a problem for him, though. Thanks for posting this!

@Alison:

Thanks for the tip! I cannot stand the garlic sauce bottles, they just taste off … kinda chemical. We’re addicted to this version!

This sounds like a great sauce for so many things. I agree, the combination of Greek Yogurt and Mayo is just perfect!

Kay,

This looks fabulous. I have made a similar recipe in the past but with a ton of carmelized chopped onions. Yum!

I make a simple tzatziki with equal parts plain greek yoghurt and sour cream (full fat is best but reduced or non is ok, I guess), a cucumber finely chopped and drained (guesstimate the size you think you need), and however much fresh finely chopped/pressed/minced garlic you want. I just dump it all togther, stir it well, then start salting with kosher salt until I think it tastes right. I use it on anything I can think of. Everyone who tries it always asks for the recipe.

This garlic sauce looks addictive. I can imagine putting it on chicken, fish, potatoes… I just wrote a post this morning of one of our favorite bbq sauces. It’s a Plum-Jalapeno sauce, with a touch of mango. Sweet with a kick. Here’s the link:

I just found your blog and read your garlic sauce recipe. It sounds so delectable. It reminds me of a sauce my mother used to make (in France) and it is called sauce aïoli. I think it only takes an egg yolk, mustard, garlic, and olive oil. I shall try yours and will come back to read more of your recipes.

YESSSS! These sauce recipes are just what I need! Ever since we moved abroad I can’t remember anything I ever made in the states. And hm, I can’t remember making anything here…so that leaves me really hurting for great yummy summer recipes like these! I love the idea of collecting sauce recipes–they’re so versatile, no matter what’s in the fridge (almost).

Oh man, this looks great and it sounds so simple! I’m going to try it IF I can get greek yogurt around here. I think it would be great with artichoke hearts in it, too. Mmmmm!

This sounds just delicious! I use greek yougurt quite a bit. This is what I do when my husband makes chicken kabobs:

Greek Yougurt
Grated/Shredded cucumber
Dill (fresh or dry, whatever I have)
Fresh lemon juice
Garlic (sometimes but not always, depends on how I feel)

Can’t even tell you the measurements. I just mix and taste until I like what I taste :)

My family goes nuts with this. Especially the next day with the leftovers we make kabob sandwiches.

I think it would be perfect just for the fries as well, not only the french ones. I actually tried this one a few years ago in dutch restaurant.

I’ve never even heard of greek yogurt. is it something that you find in a standard grocery store? Can you (and would you even want to) sub standard yogurt?
